Shirley C. Worthington

April 11, 1936 — January 26, 2026

Grantsville

Shirley C. Worthington, a longtime resident of Tooele County, passed away on January 26, 2026 at the age of 89. Shirley is the daughter of Abrum LeGrant Van Noy and Elva Coy. She was born April 11, 1936 in Ogden, Utah. Shirley married Jay Worthington on June 14, 1955 in the Salt Lake City Temple.

Shirley and Jay are the parents of three children: Belinda (Robert) Butler, Jason Worthington, Dawnella (Scott) Rich. Six grandchildren: Rhett (Kelli) Butler, Brianna (Scott) Rounds, Nicole (Brad) Orgill, Danette Smith, Sabrina Beshore, Peter (Bailey) Smith and 17 great-grandchildren.

Shirley was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in many positions, but perhaps her favorite was as a Gospel Doctrine teacher. Shirley and Jay served a service mission for the LDS Church at the Heber Valley Girls Camp as it was being constructed. They both served for many years as Ordinance Workers in the Salt Lake City Temple.

Shirley had an incredible memory for numbers, that skill led her to begin a career in banking. Her first banking job was working for First Security Bank in Tooele, Utah as a filing clerk. She quickly learned the banking business and worked in many capacities at various banking institutions along the Wasatch Front and in Tooele County. She was known as the Manager of Grantsville’s All-Women Bank. This Commercial Security Bank branch office received recognition in 1972 as the only bank in Utah that was run entirely by women.

Along with her career in the banking industry, she was an active cattle rancher’s wife, served as a member of the Tooele County School Board as well as serving as a member of the Tooele County Planning and Zoning Commission.

For recreation, Shirley and Jay spent time traveling the Mountain West in their travel trailer or working in their wood shop creating beautiful objects out of wood that were gifted to special friends and family.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Jay, her parents, two brothers, two sisters. Shirley is survived by a sister Donna (Stan) Ward, brother Bill (Wink) Van Noy and numerous nieces and nephews.

As the family of Shirley, it is with deep gratitude that we acknowledge the compassionate care Shirley received from the Staff of Mountain West Medical Center, Harmony Home Healthcare/Hospice nurses and therapists, Dr. Ronald Trudell, Lacey Cooper and Shirley’s kind and loving nurse, Gwen. As well as the countless aides, extended family members, neighbors and friends who cared for Shirley over the past three years. You were a ray of sunshine even on the hardest days.
