Richard Arthur McDonald, lovingly known as “Pops,” passed away on March 16, 2026, at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and miles of memories.
Richard was born on October 16, 1944, in Salt Lake City, Utah, at LDS Hospital, to William Arthur McDonald and Mary LaRue Lallis. From an early age, he carried a spirit of independence and adventure that would define his life.
He spent over 50 years as a dedicated truck driver, earning the remarkable distinction of more than 4,000,000 accident-free miles—a testament to his skill, commitment, and steady presence on the road. Even after retiring at the age of 78, Richard’s love for travel never faded. He made his home in Bear Lake, a place he cherished, but his heart always belonged to the open road. True to his nature, he often set out on road trips with no set destination—just the joy of the journey ahead.
Richard had a deep appreciation for the simple pleasures in life. He loved truck stop meals, good conversation, and connecting with people wherever he went. He had the gift of gab and could strike up a friendship with anyone. You could often find him at the Minnetonka Café, sharing stories, laughter, and time with his dear friend Cathy.
Above all, Richard was a kind, generous man—a friend to everyone and a pillar to his family. His stories, humor, and warmth will be treasured forever.
He is survived by his seven children, 30 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward his legacy of love and resilience.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Doris; his parents; and two brothers.
Richard will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he has taken his final journey, his spirit will live on in every mile traveled, every story shared, and every heart he touched.
A Celebration of Life will be held in July. Follow for further details.
