Mary Hammond

Grantsville, Utah - Our beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother, neighbor and friend, left mortality to return to her Heavenly Father, July 2, 2015. She was born December 20, 1947 to Marvin Franklin Young and Thelma Ruth Carter. She married Thomas R. Hammond on August 20, 1970 and that marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She is survived by her husband, Tom, sons Troy, Travis, Todd, Tovey, daughter Autumn (Hancey) and a wonderful posterity of 20 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Gary and three grandchildren, Keenan Hyrum, Natalie Antoinette and Bowdie Bob. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints serving in many ward and stake positions throughout her life in the Primary, Relief Society and Young Women organizations. She also served for many years as a ward organist and pianist. She loved playing the piano and organ but she also loved playing the Clarinet and Trumpet in the BYU Marching Band. After being married just a short time, she took a Geneaology class and became totally committed to searching out her ancestors. Through her dedication and research, she was able to meet some of her relatives in Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee that none of her immediate family knew about and remained in close contact with them for years. She loved submitting names to the LDS Temple so individuals could begin receiving their temple work. During the course of forty + years she submitted over 55,000 names for temple work. Imagine the reunion she is having now. She was a Reporter for the Tooele Transcript Bulletin for nineteen years. She received numerous state and national awards for her in-depth coverage of news breaking stories. Her main passion in writing was for her weekly column "From the Heart" in which she expressed her feelings about every day events that affected many people's lives. Mostly she loved doing feature stories about people within Tooele County which recognized them for their many talents and contributions. Her stories would be in the Transcript's quarterly magazines so many people had an opportunity to read them. She would not just focus on the individual but she would find out who their parents were, where they came from, what they did for a living, etc. After reading her stories about a certain individual, you would feel like you knew them for years even though you never met them. She also had the opportunity to go to Haiti to witness the great dedication of medical experts who volunteered their time to assist some of the greatest people she ever met who had serious physical disabilities but always had a smile on their faces. Unfortunately, she wasn't able to bring them home with her, she really wanted to. Although she truly loved doing the Lord's work, she totally loved being around her children and grandchildren. Watching them participate in school, sports and other activities brought constant joy to her. She will be greatly missed by those that knew her but many cherished memories of her will be remembered for years to come. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Thursday, July 9, 2014 at the Grantsville 9th Chapel (414 W. Apple St, Grantsville). Friends and family may visit Wednesday, July 8th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow at Grantsville City Cemetery.
