Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, Marjorie Mae Calvert Gundersen, 91, passed away peacefully April 16, 2014. She will be dearly missed by many. Marjie was born May 30, 1922 to John Morgan Calvert and Clara Lucinda Marshall. She met her sweetheart, Grant Ask Gundersen, at a church dance. They were married June 18, 1941 in the Salt Lake temple. The first years of their marriage were spent moving from place to place as Grant enlisted in the Air Corps while World War II was raging. It was evident throughout her life that two things were very important to Marjie: a love of family and devotion to serving others. Grant and Marjie were thrilled to add eight children to their family and rejoiced as each new grandchild was added to the circle of love. The couple took seriously their responsibility to “love and care for each other and their children.” They truly believed “the family is ordained of God.” Family parties and traditions were important to Marjie. Monthly Sunday dinners were held at her home as well as holidays in between. Her favorite was Valentine’s Day, “because everybody remembers to love everybody else.” There were gifts given and special sugar cookies made to express her love to each of us. We will long remember Grant singing “My Little Marjie” at the yearly Valentine talent show. Their love and care for each other was evident and especially tender at the end of her life. Marjie’s life was worn out in the service of others. She truly demonstrated a love of Jesus Christ through service. She gave of her time and resources to help “the least of these” often. She was devoted in her discipleship as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Marjie and Grant spent seventeen years serving in the temple in the sealing rooms. She served as ward relief society president and in other church callings. Many a grandchild benefited as she and Grant helped to finance church missions. Marjie was a believer in miracles. She prayed with great faith and had a firm testimony and love for our Savior, Jesus Christ. Hobbies of Marjie’s included a love of gardening and flowers. She worked hard to make her yard a piece of heaven. She canned and shared her produce with many. Marjie was a sports fan. She tried to attend as many athletic events of her children and grandchildren as possible. In fact, she and Grant were named Utah’s Super Fan of the Year in 2006. Marjie was a great cook and made an incredible amount of delicious rolls every Christmas breakfast. As her girls grew up, she stayed up late into the night sewing matching dresses. She and Grant attended many dances during their courtship and looked forward to dancing at the Old Folks Sociable every year. They also loved to hear their daughters sing. Marjie is survived by her husband, Grant, three sons and five daughters: Sherry (Earl) Larsen, Vicky (Ernie) Matthews, Sandy (Steve) Allred, Kristy (Craig) Bleazard, Jerry (Audrey) Gundersen, Cindy (Edward) Cole, Kim (Tammy) Gundersen, and Tarvy (Priscilla) Gundersen. She has 47 grandchildren and 127 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. We are very proud to be counted among her posterity. She is also survived by her sister, LaBelle Fischl (98). Marjie was preceded in death by her parents, John and Clara, and brother Morgan. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 19, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the Grantsville Stake Center, 550 E Durfee St. Friends and family may call on Friday, April 18, 2014 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the service, at the same location. Interment will be in the Grantsville City Cemetery.
